Rotterdam, July 16, 2019 – On July 16th, Cobana in Rotterdam was officially completed and ready to welcome its new residents. Developer and investor IC Netherlands celebrated this joyous occasion with construction company Heijmans, councilor Bas Kurvers, and other involved parties on Cobana’s rooftop terrace. Various speakers took the floor, including councilor Bas Kurvers: “We want young professionals to connect with the city and stay here. This project contributes significantly to that goal.”
Heijmans, commissioned by IC Netherlands, has built the apartment complex with 375 apartments in a new part of Rotterdam; Katendrecht. This former Zeemanskwartier has become one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the city in recent years. Inspired by well-known industrial harbor buildings in the area, Rijnboutt designed a sturdy residential building for young professionals. After starting in July 2016, with a design process of approximately one year (from preliminary design to working drawings) and a construction period of around 2 years, the building now stands as if it has always been there. “It is incredibly impressive what all the involved parties have achieved to complete this in 2 years. We are very proud of it!” said Peter van der Gugten (Director of Heijmans N.V.).
Cobana includes various types of studios and apartments ranging from 37m² to 70m². Additionally, there is a unique concept within Cobana: the so-called ‘Friends Apartments’. In these apartments, the kitchen and living room are shared between two or three friends, but each has their own bedroom with a bathroom. The residents can use various communal spaces such as a library, rooftop terrace, and cooking studio. Cobana is a co-living concept for young professionals and currently operates three similar complexes in Amsterdam. Moreno Monsanto, Director of Concepts: “At IC, we are incredibly proud to add this beautiful project to our portfolio and to operate our first location in Rotterdam.”
